The chair problem

A recliner is the one seat in the room that needs a plug

Sofas go against walls. Chairs do not. A reading chair or a recliner is the piece people angle into a corner, float beside a window or turn toward a fire, and that is exactly where the electrical code stops helping. NEC 210.52(A) requires receptacle outlets in habitable rooms so that no point measured horizontally along the floor line in any unbroken wall space is more than 6 feet from an outlet, and a receptacle in each wall space 2 feet or more in width.¹ It is a rule about walls. A powered recliner or a lift chair placed away from one is your problem to solve, not the code's.

The second thing to know is that a chair is regulated furniture in its own right. The federal definition at 16 CFR 1640.3(e) covers an article of seating furniture intended for indoor use, movable or stationary, constructed with an upholstered seat, back or arm, and either sold with a cushion or pillow or stuffed, filled, or able to be stuffed or filled.² Movable or stationary is doing real work in that sentence. A recliner is covered. So is a single club chair.

The third is money, where the picture is thin and worth saying plainly. Neither manufacturer feed we read published a recliner price at all. Both published chairs, ottomans and replacement parts, and those figures are below with the dates they were read. No government series, trade association or cost study publishes an average price for a recliner or an armchair, so nothing in this guide will pretend to.

Six things to settle before you buy a chair

Two are code, two are the federal furniture rule, and two are prices manufacturers publish themselves.

Solve the power before you place the chair

Receptacle spacing under NEC 210.52(A) is measured along the floor line of unbroken wall space, nothing more than 6 feet from an outlet, one in every wall space 2 feet or wider.¹ A powered recliner sitting three feet off the wall is outside that geometry. Settle the supply with an electrician at layout stage.

Expect the same label a sofa carries

A chair meeting the federal definition of upholstered furniture needs the permanent label reading, Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability.² There is no small item exception in the rule. If a single accent chair arrives without that statement anywhere on it, ask the seller to account for it.

Children's chairs are in, exercise chairs are out

The federal definition explicitly includes an article of furniture that is intended for use by a child, and explicitly excludes furniture used exclusively for the purpose of physical fitness and exercise.² Mattresses, foundations and bedding products are also carved out. That boundary decides which piece in a family room needs the label.

Buy the frame, then price the cover

Ottomans are their own purchase

Check what is catalogued as a spare part

Cushions and legs fail long before frames do. Sabai listed Elevate Furniture Legs at $12.00, Elevate Seat Cushion Inserts at $175.00 to $395.00 and Essential Seating Platforms at $20.00 to $65.00.³ Floyd listed The Floyd Leg at $5.00 to $49.00.⁴ A published parts list is a real buying signal.

What does it cost?

Take the gap first. We found no recliner price published by any manufacturer, agency or trade body, and no cost study of any kind for seating of this type. Every recliner average in circulation traces to a lead generation aggregator with no stated method, so none appears here. What two manufacturers do publish, on their own domains and read on 7 August 2026, are chairs and ottomans. Floyd listed The Gere Easy Chair at $1,210.00 to $1,490.00 and its Form Ottoman at $910.00 to $1,090.00.⁴ Sabai listed ottomans from $625.00 to $1,295.00.³

The cheaper path is often parts rather than furniture. From Sabai's feed the same day: Essential Seat Cushion Covers at $65.00 to $255.00, Elevate Seat Cushion Covers at $125.00 to $655.00, Elevate Seat Cushion Inserts at $175.00 to $395.00 and furniture legs at $12.00.³ Floyd listed legs at $5.00 to $49.00 and sofa parts at $5.00 to $175.00.⁴ For work a shop has to do rather than a part you order, the only published figure is wages: upholsterers had a $22.28 median hourly wage in the 2025 OEWS data.⁵

All furniture and part prices were read from two manufacturers' own product feeds on 7 August 2026 and exclude delivery, assembly and tax. The upholsterer figure is a 2025 OEWS estimate of what employees are paid, not a shop rate charged to a homeowner. No recliner price is published anywhere we could verify.

Who does the work

Three people, depending on the job. A retailer or manufacturer supplies and delivers. A licensed electrician handles supply for a powered recliner in a spot the wall receptacle rule does not reach.¹ An upholsterer recovers a frame worth keeping, an occupation the 2025 OEWS counted at 20,140 employed with a $22.28 median hourly wage and a $22.76 mean.⁵

What pros will ask

An upholsterer will ask about the frame, the springs and the yardage your fabric needs. An electrician will ask where the chair actually sits relative to the nearest outlet, because 210.52(A) provisions wall space and not floor space.¹ A retailer should ask whether the chair is for a child, since that changes nothing about the flammability rule but a lot about placement.²

What to check before signing

Check the permanent flammability label on the chair itself before it comes off the truck.² Check whether legs, cushion inserts and cushion covers are catalogued as parts and at what price, because two manufacturers publish those and many do not.³⁴ For a powered chair, confirm cord routing in writing so nobody solves it later with an extension cord across a rug.

How much does a recliner cost?

We cannot tell you, and neither can anyone with a source. No manufacturer feed we read published a recliner price, and no government series or trade association publishes an average. What is published nearby: Floyd listed The Gere Easy Chair at $1,210.00 to $1,490.00 on 7 August 2026.⁴ That is a specific chair from one design forward brand, not a benchmark. If a seller quotes you a range described as typical, ask which source it comes from.

Where can I put a powered recliner?

Anywhere you like, but the wiring code only provisions walls. NEC 210.52(A) requires that no point along the floor line of an unbroken wall space be more than 6 feet from a receptacle, with one in every wall space 2 feet or wider.¹ Nothing in it covers the middle of a room. If your chair belongs on a diagonal or beside a window with no nearby outlet, get an electrician to plan the supply rather than running a cord under a rug.

Is recovering a chair cheaper than replacing it?

Usually, though the honest comparison is narrower than it looks. Sabai publishes both sides for its own products: The Essential Club Chair cover at $245.00 and The Elevate Chair cover at $275.00 on 7 August 2026.³ That is a manufacturer supplied cover for its own frame, which is a different product from a trade reupholstery job on an arbitrary chair. No source publishes reupholstery pricing, so get a written quote from a shop rather than reasoning from cover prices.

Are chairs a tip over hazard?

CPSC does not report them as their own category, which is worth knowing. The furniture breakdown in its tip over report is tables at 4,900 injuries a year on average, shelving and bookcases at 3,100, chests and dressers at 3,100, cabinets at 1,700 and all remaining furniture at 1,700, on a total of 14,500.⁶ Seniors were 24 percent of that total. So the anchoring conversation in a family room belongs to the tables and shelving around your chair rather than the chair itself.
