Coffee and End Tables

Tables are the largest furniture tip over injury category CPSC reports, for children, adults and seniors alike. Here is the data and what it changes.

The top category

The most dangerous piece of furniture in your living room is a table

Furniture tip over coverage is almost always about dressers and children. CPSC's own data says something different. In its 2023 tip over report, tables were involved in about one in three, 34 percent, of emergency department treated tip over injuries involving furniture over all ages, and tables were the largest furniture related category for each age group: children, adults and seniors.1 On the report's annual average for 2020 to 2022, that is 4,900 injuries a year out of an all ages total of 14,500.

The rest of the table is worth reading too. Shelving, shelving units and bookcases accounted for 3,100 injuries, or 22 percent. Chests, bureaus and dressers accounted for 3,100, or 21 percent. Cabinets were 1,700, and all remaining furniture another 1,700.1 Tables and bookcases together, both of them living room furniture, are more than half the total. Seniors were 24 percent of the injuries, which is a wider audience than the child focused advice usually assumes.

Where it happens matters as well. Of reported tip over fatalities, the report gives 44 percent in bedrooms, 15 percent in living or family rooms, 16 percent in other locations including kitchens and dining rooms, and 25 percent in unknown room locations.1 The living room share is not the largest, but it is not small, and the furniture involved there is precisely the low table you put your feet on.

Six things to decide about the tables in the room

The first three come from CPSC's injury data. The rest come from wiring code and published manufacturer prices.

Treat tables as the priority, not the afterthought

Tables were the largest furniture tip over injury category for every age group in CPSC's report, at 4,900 emergency department treated injuries a year on average.1 Whatever attention you give to securing a bookcase, give at least as much to the console, side table and coffee table your household leans on daily.

Plan for adults and seniors, not only toddlers

Seniors were 24 percent of tip over injuries across the CPSC totals, and tables were the top category for them as well as for children and adults.1 A table that gets used as a handhold when someone stands up is a different design problem from one a child climbs, and both are in the data.

The television is no longer the thing that falls

CPSC recorded only 3 tip over deaths involving a television between January 1, 2020 and July 31, 2023, against 103 television related fatalities across January 2013 to July 2023.1 Flat panels replaced heavy tube sets. The hazard moved to the furniture the panel sits on, which is usually a low table.

The end table is a wiring decision

An end table exists to hold a lamp. NEC 210.52(A) puts a receptacle within 6 feet of any point along the floor line of unbroken wall space, with one in every wall space 2 feet or wider.2 Place the table against that geometry, or you will be taping a cord to a floor.

Coffee table prices you can actually check

Floyd published these on its own feed on 7 August 2026: The Lift Off Coffee Table at $700.00 to $2,000.00, The Modular Table at $1,275.00 to $1,875.00, The Lift Off Bench at $700.00 to $800.00 and The Block at $365.00.3 Coffee table parts were listed separately at $125.00 to $360.00.

An ottoman changes which rule applies

Swap a coffee table for an upholstered ottoman and the piece leaves the table category and enters the federal upholstered furniture standard instead, label and all.4 Sabai listed ottomans from $625.00 to $1,295.00 and Floyd its Form Ottoman at $910.00 to $1,090.00 on 7 August 2026.53

What does it cost?

One manufacturer in our data publishes table prices on its own domain, and those are the only table figures here. Read on 7 August 2026, Floyd listed The Lift Off Coffee Table at $700.00 to $2,000.00, The Modular Table at $1,275.00 to $1,875.00, The Lift Off Bench at $700.00 to $800.00 and The Block at $365.00.3 It also catalogues repairs: coffee table parts at $125.00 to $360.00 and Lift Off Supports at $70.00 to $454.00. A published parts list is the difference between a table you fix and a table you replace.

Two gaps are worth naming rather than filling. We found no published end table or side table price from any manufacturer, agency or trade source, so no figure appears above for one. And there is no authoritative average price for living room tables of any kind: no federal statistical series covers it, no trade association surveys it, and every average in circulation comes from a lead generation aggregator with no method attached. If you want an upholstered alternative, Sabai listed ottomans from $625.00 to $1,295.00 the same day.5

All prices were read from two manufacturers' own published product feeds on 7 August 2026, are list prices for the item named, and exclude delivery, assembly and tax. Injury and fatality figures are CPSC staff estimates from its 2023 tip over report, not counts of every incident.

Hiring

How to hire for living room tables and anchoring

1

Who does the work

Tables mostly arrive flat packed and are assembled by a delivery crew or by you. Securing furniture to a wall is handyman or carpenter work and depends on what is behind the drywall. If the table you are placing needs a nearby outlet for a lamp or a console, that part is a licensed electrician's job, because it touches a branch circuit.6

2

What pros will ask

Expect questions about who uses the room, because CPSC's data shows tip over injuries spread across children, adults and seniors rather than concentrating in one group.1 Expect questions about wall construction if anything is being anchored. Expect a question about where your receptacles already sit, since 210.52(A) provisions wall space and nothing else.2

3

What to check before signing

Ask whether the table ships with any anchoring hardware or whether that is a separate purchase. Ask which components are catalogued as spare parts and at what price, since one manufacturer we read publishes coffee table parts at $125.00 to $360.00 and many publish none.3 Confirm delivery and assembly charges in writing, because feed prices exclude both.

FAQ

Coffee and end table questions, answered straight

Which furniture actually causes the most tip over injuries?

Tables. In CPSC's 2023 report, tables were involved in about one in three, 34 percent, of emergency department treated furniture tip over injuries over all ages, and were the largest category for children, adults and seniors alike.1 The annual average breakdown for 2020 to 2022 is tables 4,900, shelving and bookcases 3,100, chests and dressers 3,100, cabinets 1,700 and remaining furniture 1,700, on a total of 14,500.

Do coffee tables need to be anchored to the wall?

CPSC's report establishes where injuries happen rather than prescribing a fix by product type, so we will not put words in it. What the data supports is priority. Tables were the top furniture tip over injury category in every age group, and living or family rooms were the location in 15 percent of reported tip over deaths.1 Treat any table that gets climbed, leaned on or used as a handhold as worth securing, and ask the retailer what hardware exists for the specific model.

How much does a coffee table cost?

No authoritative average exists. What you can check is a manufacturer's own list. Floyd published The Lift Off Coffee Table at $700.00 to $2,000.00, The Modular Table at $1,275.00 to $1,875.00 and The Block at $365.00 on its own feed on 7 August 2026.3 That is one design forward brand rather than a national picture, and the spread inside a single product line tells you how little a single average would mean here.

Is a television still a tip over risk?

Much less than it was. CPSC recorded only 3 tip over deaths involving a television between January 1, 2020 and July 31, 2023, set against 103 television related fatalities across January 2013 to July 2023.1 The report also cautions that fatality counts for 2021 to 2023 should be considered incomplete because of reporting lag. The practical read is that the risk shifted from the set to the stand it sits on.

Where should an end table go so the lamp cord reaches?

Against the geometry the code gives you. NEC 210.52(A) requires that no point measured horizontally along the floor line in any unbroken wall space be more than 6 feet from a receptacle outlet, and that a receptacle go in each wall space 2 feet or more wide.2 Nothing in that rule covers the middle of the room. If your layout puts a lamp away from every wall, plan the supply with an electrician instead of running a cord under the rug.
