A furniture set is a bundle, and you can check the bundle against its parts

A living room set is sold as one decision. It is really four or five, and at least one manufacturer publishes enough to let you take it apart. Floyd lists each unit of its Form sectional separately on its own product feed: Form Middle at $1,050.00 to $1,510.00, Form Left End and Form Right End at $1,170.00 to $2,160.00, Form Corner at $1,230.00 to $2,350.00, and Form Left or Right Side Chaise at $1,270.00 to $2,390.00.¹ It also lists a Two Piece Form Sectional as a bundle at $2,880.00 to $3,860.00. You can do the arithmetic yourself.

The second thing a set does is quietly stack up regulated products. Every upholstered piece in it falls under the federal flammability standard at 16 CFR 1640, which applies to upholstered furniture manufactured, imported or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021, and requires a permanent label carrying the statement, Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability.² That label is the manufacturer's certification. It belongs on the sofa, the loveseat and the club chair alike.

The third thing is that the non upholstered half of the set is where the injuries are. In CPSC's tip over reporting, tables were involved in about one in three, 34 percent, of emergency department treated furniture tip over injuries over all ages, and shelving units and bookcases another 22 percent.³ Those are set pieces. Plan anchoring at the point of purchase, not after delivery.

Six things to settle before you buy the whole set

Each of these is checkable against a published price, a federal rule or CPSC's own injury data.

Price the bundle against the units

Where a manufacturer publishes both, compare them. Floyd lists a Two Piece Form Sectional at $2,880.00 to $3,860.00 and every individual Form unit at its own price on the same feed, read 7 August 2026.¹ No source publishes what a set discount typically is, so the only honest check is the one you run yourself.

Count the labels, not the pieces

The federal standard covers any indoor seating article with an upholstered seat, back or arm that is sold with a cushion or is stuffed or fillable.² That definition catches the loveseat, the accent chair and furniture intended for a child. It excludes mattresses, foundations and furniture used exclusively for fitness and exercise.

Anchor the tables and the bookcase

Tables were the largest furniture tip over injury category for children, adults and seniors alike, at 4,900 of an all ages annual average of 14,500 emergency department treated injuries.³ Shelving and bookcases added 3,100. Living and family rooms were the room in 15 percent of reported tip over deaths.

Ask whether parts are sold separately

Serviceability is a real difference between sets. Floyd publishes a spare parts catalogue with The Floyd Leg at $5.00 to $49.00, sofa parts at $5.00 to $175.00, sectional parts at $8.00 to $15.00 and coffee table parts at $125.00 to $360.00.¹ A set you can repair outlives a set you cannot.

Treat covers as a separate budget line

Size the set to the wall you have

No source publishes typical living room dimensions, so measure. What is published is whole house size: the median new single family home fell to 2,150 square feet in 2024, the lowest in 15 years.⁵ Check your receptacle positions before you commit to a wall length.⁶

What does it cost?

No authoritative source publishes an average price for a living room furniture set, so here is a transparent bill of materials instead, built only from prices Floyd published on its own feed on 7 August 2026.¹ A four unit sectional made of Form Left End, Form Middle, Form Corner and Form Right Side Chaise, taken at the bottom of each published range, adds up as $1,170.00 plus $1,050.00 plus $1,230.00 plus $1,270.00, which is $4,720.00. Taken at the top of each range it is $2,160.00 plus $1,510.00 plus $2,350.00 plus $2,390.00, which is $8,410.00.

Add the rest of the set from the same feed and the arithmetic stays visible. The Lift Off Coffee Table was $700.00 to $2,000.00, the Grid Rug $495.00 to $995.00 and a rug pad $55.00 to $165.00. Bottom of every range that is $5,970.00, top of every range $11,570.00. Who does the work

Most sets arrive flat and are assembled by a delivery crew or by you. A designer specifies and sources, and the 2025 OEWS put interior designers at a $32.31 median hourly wage with employment of 71,500.⁷ An upholsterer is the person you call later, when a frame is sound and the fabric is not: that occupation had employment of 20,140 and a $22.28 median hourly wage.⁸

What pros will ask

Expect to be asked for the configuration in plain terms: how many seats, which end takes the chaise, and which side the corner faces. Expect a question about cover material, because on the published feeds the same frame changes price by fabric.⁴ Expect to be asked where the outlets are, since anything floated off the wall sits outside the receptacle spacing rule.⁶

What to check before signing

Confirm every upholstered piece will carry the federal flammability label, which has been required since June 25, 2022.² Confirm the seller will price units individually as well as bundled. Confirm which spare parts are catalogued and at what price. Confirm what delivery, assembly and removal add, because manufacturer feed prices exclude all of it.

Is a furniture set cheaper than buying the pieces separately?

Sometimes, and you can test it rather than assume it. No primary source publishes typical set discounts. What some manufacturers do publish is both numbers. Floyd listed a Two Piece Form Sectional at $2,880.00 to $3,860.00 and each individual Form unit at its own price on the same feed on 7 August 2026.¹ Add the units you actually want, compare that to the bundle, and ignore any percentage saving quoted without a base price attached to it.

Do all the pieces in a set have to meet the same flammability standard?

Every piece that is upholstered furniture under the federal definition does. That definition covers an article of indoor seating furniture, movable or stationary, built with an upholstered seat, back or arm, sold with a cushion or pillow or able to be stuffed or filled.² It explicitly includes furniture intended for use by a child and excludes mattresses, foundations, bedding products and furniture used exclusively for fitness and exercise. A wooden side table in the same set is not covered by that rule.

Which pieces in the set need to be anchored?

Start with tables and bookcases. In CPSC's report, tables accounted for 4,900 emergency department treated tip over injuries a year on average, 34 percent of the all ages total of 14,500, and were the largest category for children, adults and seniors.³ Shelving units and bookcases added 3,100, or 22 percent. Seniors were 24 percent of the total, which is a wider audience than the child focused advice usually assumes.

How much should I budget for a sectional?

No authoritative average exists, so build it from published parts. Should I buy a new set or recover the one I have?

No source publishes reupholstery pricing, so nobody can hand you the comparison. Two facts are solid. First, reupholstering is regulated work: the federal standard applies to upholstered furniture manufactured, imported or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021.² Second, upholsterers had a median wage of $22.28 an hour in the 2025 OEWS data, which is what employees are paid and not what a shop bills.⁸ Manufacturer slipcover prices are a different product from a trade reupholstery job.
