Flooring Installation Cost
Every material's money question on one page, in honest per-square-foot bands you can plan with.
One page of flooring math
Installation searches run through every material in our flooring demand data, from carpet installation to ceramic tile installation to how-to-install everything, and they all share one underlying question: what will this floor cost me, done properly, in my house? This page is the comparison the individual guides link back to.
The universal structure: flooring quotes are material plus labor plus the lines people forget. Materials range from $1 laminate to $20 stone per square foot. Labor scales with method: floating click floors cost least to install, stretched carpet and nailed hardwood sit mid, and mortared tile and stone cost the most because they are built, not laid. The forgotten lines, removal and haul-away of old floors, subfloor repair and leveling, transitions, stairs, baseboards and furniture moves, routinely add a meaningful share of the total, and they are where lowball quotes hide.
Comparing bids works the same in flooring as everywhere: identical written scope to multiple local pros, itemized responses, and suspicion of the big low outlier. Per-square-foot numbers make materials comparable; the line items make contractors comparable. The bands below are commonly published planning ballparks, and your ZIP's labor market, not any chart, sets the final figure.
Installed cost bands by material
Commonly published planning ballparks per square foot, material plus professional labor.
Carpet: $3 to $7
With pad. Stairs price per step; pad upgrades are cheap longevity. The lowest whole-room numbers in flooring.
Sheet vinyl and laminate: $4 to $8
The value click-and-roll tier. Subfloor flattening is the quiet extra that keeps these floors honest.
Luxury vinyl plank: $4 to $8
Waterproof wood looks. Rigid cores and 20 mil wear layers sit at the top of the band and earn it.
Hardwood: $8 to $15
Solid and engineered mainstream lines. Refinishing existing wood at $3 to $8 is the bargain hiding in this row.
Ceramic and porcelain tile: $10 to $20
Labor-led craft pricing. Large formats and mosaics push higher; substrate prep is non-negotiable.
Natural stone: $15 to $30
Marble, granite, travertine and slate, set by specialists over verified substrates, plus a sealing schedule for life.
What does it cost?
Whole-project math for a typical room: carpet in the hundreds, laminate and LVP around a thousand, hardwood in the low thousands, tile and stone beyond. Whole-floor and whole-home jobs price better per foot than single rooms in every material.
The levers that move any quote: old floor removal, subfloor condition, stairs and transitions, furniture handling, product grade within the material, and your regional labor market. Every band on this page is a labeled assumption for planning, not a promise; competing local bids are the real number.
Ballparks based on commonly published national averages, stated as assumptions, not measured local pricing. Your competing quotes set the real number for your home and ZIP.
How to hire for flooring installation work
Who does the work
Match the pro to the material: carpet crews stretch, hardwood installers nail and finish, tile setters build. Multi-material projects, common in whole-home refreshes, favor flooring companies that carry all three crews under one contract.
What pros will ask
Rooms and square footage by material, what comes out first, subfloor knowledge if you have it, product selections or grade briefs, and sequencing with any painting or remodeling happening around the floors.
What to check before signing
That every bid itemizes materials, labor, removal, prep, transitions and stairs separately, so materials compare against materials and installers against installers. Warranty terms on workmanship, and who returns leftover product, close out the checklist.

Flooring Installation Cost questions, answered straight
What is the cheapest floor to install?
Carpet and sheet vinyl deliver the lowest installed whole-room costs, with laminate and entry LVP close behind. Cheapest per year is a different contest: hardwood's refinishability and tile's lifespan amortize their premiums over decades.
Why did my quote exceed the per-square-foot chart?
The chart is material and labor; your floor also had removal, subfloor repair, leveling compound, stairs, transitions and furniture in it. Those lines are real work, and their absence from a competitor's lowball quote is a warning, not a discount.
Does old flooring have to come out?
Usually for carpet, tile and glue-down products; floating floors can often go over sound existing hard surfaces. Height at doors and appliances, and what moisture might be trapped, are the checks a pro makes before saying yes.
How much does subfloor repair add?
Small patches add little; rot, out-of-flat slabs and structural fixes add real money and are unknowable until floors open. Holding a modest contingency, as with any remodel work, keeps discoveries from becoming disputes.
Is DIY installation worth it?
Click laminate and LVP in simple rooms, genuinely yes. Stretched carpet, nailed hardwood and mortared tile reward professional tools and practice, and their failures cost more than their labor. DIY the floating floors; hire the built ones.
