Bedding is the only part of the bedroom nobody prices publicly

Mattresses are priced in the open. Tempur-Pedic listed queen mattresses from $1,999.00 to $10,598.00 on its own shop page¹. Bed frames are priced in the open. Storage is priced in the open, with IKEA PAX wardrobe combinations running $575.00 to $2,075.00². Bedding is not. Our research found no government body, trade association or manufacturer publishing a price for sheets, bedspreads or linens with any methodology behind it.

That absence is worth naming rather than papering over. Every "average cost of bedding" figure in circulation traces back to a lead-generation aggregator with no published methodology. We will not repeat one. What follows is what you can actually verify and act on.

Which turns out to be more than you would expect. The size you buy is set by the mattress, and mattresses are priced and sized publicly. Where the linens live is set by storage that has published prices and published dimensions. And none of it is construction, which changes what you have to worry about.

Six decisions you can make from verifiable facts

Buy to the mattress, not the bed

Manufacturers price by mattress size. Tempur-Pedic quoted its whole range in queen: Cloud at $1,999.00, Adapt at $2,299.00, Breeze at $4,499.00, ActiveBreeze at $10,598.00¹. The bed frame name tells you nothing about linen size. The mattress does.

Depth is the number nobody publishes

Saatva listed a single Classic price with no per-size breakout on the product page³. Manufacturers publish prices far more readily than they publish mattress depth. Measure your own mattress from the seam at the bottom to the top of the quilting before you order a fitted sheet.

Storage is the part that has a price

IKEA published PAX wardrobe combinations at $575.00, $745.00, $820.00, $1,120.00, $1,330.00, $1,400.00, $1,730.00, $1,955.00 and $2,075.00, each with its dimensions listed². If you want a real number attached to your linen problem, that is where it lives.

Extend rather than replace

The same IKEA page priced add-on units separately: a mid-unit at $140.00 and an end-unit at $110.00². Adding capacity to an existing run costs a fraction of a new combination. Check whether your current system takes add-ons before you price a replacement.

Linen storage costs you floor area

A PAX combination listed at 59 inches wide by 22 7/8 inches deep occupies about 9.4 square feet². Saint Paul requires habitable rooms other than the main one to be at least 70 square feet⁴. That is roughly 13 percent of a minimum-size bedroom gone. Both figures are published; the division is ours.

None of it is construction

The 2021 International Residential Code lists painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work as exempt from a building permit⁵. Bedding does not even reach that threshold. No permit, no inspection, no code question. Spend your attention on sizing instead.

What does it cost?

We could not verify a single bedding price. No government agency, no trade association and no manufacturer we reached publishes what a sheet set, a duvet or a bedspread costs in a way that can be checked. That is unusual for a consumer category this large, and it means every number you will see quoted elsewhere is either a retailer's own shelf price for one item or an aggregator estimate with no stated method. A shelf price is fine. An aggregator average is not, and we will not print one.

What is priced is the furniture around the bedding. IKEA PAX combinations ran $575.00 to $2,075.00, with mid-units at $140.00 and end-units at $110.00². The 147 5/8 inch combination at $1,955.00 works out to roughly $159 per linear foot of flat-pack wardrobe, which is division on two numbers from the same page and covers carcasses only, not interior fittings, doors, delivery or assembly. If someone is specifying textiles for you, note that interior designers had a national median wage of $32.31 an hour and an annual median of $67,190 in the 2025 OEWS estimates⁶. That is pay to employed designers, not a fee, and no primary source we found publishes how designers actually bill.

Who does the work

Almost always you. The only paid roles are a designer specifying textiles and a flat-pack assembler putting up storage. ASID reported 56,449 self-employed interior designers, a 3.4 percent year-over-year increase, drawing on Bureau of Labor Statistics and other third-party data rather than its own survey⁷. Employed designers had a median wage of $32.31 an hour in 2025 OEWS estimates⁶.

What pros will ask

Your mattress size and its actual depth in inches, because that decides fitted sheet drop and nobody can look it up for you. How many sets you rotate. Whether linens live in the bedroom or a hall closet. The clear wall length available for storage, since PAX combinations are sold at fixed widths from 59 inches upward². And whether a doorway can take a flat-pack carton.

What to check before signing

Get the mattress size and depth written into the order, not assumed. Confirm any storage quote states which combination it is, since IKEA prices nine different PAX combinations from $575.00 to $2,075.00 and the add-on units are billed separately at $140.00 and $110.00². Confirm delivery and assembly are priced separately. And reject any quote that leans on an industry average cost for bedding, because no such verified figure exists.

What should a good set of sheets cost?

We cannot tell you, and anyone who gives you a confident number is quoting an aggregator. No primary source we reached publishes bedding prices with a stated method. What you can do is compare shelf prices directly at the retailers you would actually buy from, and hold the comparison to one size so the numbers mean the same thing. That is exactly how mattress pricing becomes readable: Tempur-Pedic quotes its whole ladder in queen, which is why the $1,999.00 to $10,598.00 span is meaningful¹.

How do I know what size sheets to buy?

Start from the mattress, not the bed frame or the room. Mattress makers price and describe by size, which is why Tempur-Pedic can quote four collections in queen on one page¹. Size alone is not enough, though. Fitted sheets fail on depth, and depth is rarely published: Saatva's Classic page showed one price with no per-size breakout at all³. Measure your mattress yourself, from the bottom seam to the top surface, and buy to that measurement.

Do I need an interior designer to choose bedding?

No, but you can hire one. ASID reported roughly 17,500 US interior design firms and $30.9 billion in projected small business sales for 2025, compiled from Bureau of Labor Statistics and other third-party data rather than its own survey⁷. What no source publishes is how designers charge, whether hourly, flat fee per room, cost-plus or a percentage of purchases. ASID's own fee reporting sits behind a paid report. So ask any designer to put their fee structure in writing before work starts.

Where should linens actually be stored?

Wherever costs you the least floor area, because floor area in a bedroom is genuinely scarce. Saint Paul requires habitable rooms other than the primary one to be at least 70 square feet, and no less than 7 feet in any horizontal dimension⁴. A PAX combination at 59 inches by 22 7/8 inches takes about 9.4 square feet of that². If a hall closet can hold the linens, the bedroom gets that space back. The floor area math is ours, from two published figures.

Is there any code or permit issue with bedding?

None. The 2021 International Residential Code names painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work as exempt from a building permit⁵, and bedding sits well below even that line. One caveat travels with the exemption: the same code section states that being exempt from a permit does not authorize work that violates any other provision of the code or any local ordinance⁵. That matters if a storage project turns into an electrical one, not if it stays textiles.
