The frame often costs more than the mattress on it

Floyd's published product feed listed bed frames from $1,470.00 to $4,590.00¹. Thuma's feed listed its Signature Bed collaboration at $4,995.00 to $5,495.00². On the other side, Tempur-Pedic's shop page listed queen mattresses from $1,999.00, with the TEMPUR-Breeze Collection at $4,499.00³. So a Thuma Signature Bed costs more than a Breeze mattress, and the frame is not the afterthought most budgets treat it as.

That matters because frames are usually shopped last, after the mattress decision has already spent the money. Reverse the order. Set the frame budget from published prices first, then choose the mattress tier that fits what remains.

Canopy and four-poster frames add a second constraint that flat frames do not: vertical space. Posts and a top rail push into the part of the room that building departments regulate, and published minimum ceiling heights differ by city⁴⁵. Measure before you fall in love with a silhouette.

Six things that set the price of a frame

Every number below is a manufacturer's published price or a municipal published dimension.

Where the line starts

Floyd's Bed Lift Off began at $1,470.00 in its own feed¹. That is the entry to a designed frame from that maker, and it is below the entry price of a premium queen mattress at $1,999.00³. Use the entry rung as your reference point, not the hero product.

Upholstery is priced as an add-on

Floyd listed an upholstered bed frame add-on at $700.00 and The Floyd Bed Original in upholstered form at $2,250.00¹. When a maker prices upholstery separately, you can see exactly what the fabric costs. When it does not, you cannot. Ask for the split.

Range inside one model

The Classic listed at $2,710.00 to $4,190.00 and The Studio at $2,510.00 to $4,590.00¹. A single model can move by more than $2,000 across configurations. Quoting a model name without the configuration tells you almost nothing about the price.

Bundles hide the split

Floyd's Sleep System, meaning bed plus mattress, listed at $2,869.00 to $8,848.00 against frames alone at $1,470.00 to $4,590.00¹. Subtracting brackets the mattress share at $1,399.00 to $4,258.00, though the ends may not be matched configurations. Our arithmetic, their published numbers.

Canopy height against your ceiling

Saint Paul publishes a 7 foot minimum ceiling height, measured to the lowest projection⁴. Tacoma publishes 6 feet 8 inches⁵. A canopy frame has to live under whichever your house actually has, and beams at 4 feet on center may drop 6 inches further⁴.

Anchored is different from freestanding

The 2021 IRC exempts painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets and similar finish work from a building permit⁶. Freestanding furniture is well below that. Anchoring a canopy or drapery track into ceiling joists is closer to altering the building, which does require an application⁶.

Floyd published The Floyd Bed Lift Off at $1,470.00 to $3,550.00, The Floyd Bed Original upholstered at $2,250.00, The Classic at $2,710.00 to $4,190.00, The Studio at $2,510.00 to $4,590.00, and an upholstered add-on at $700.00¹. Thuma published the Signature Bed at $4,995.00 to $5,495.00². Floyd's Sleep System bundle ran $2,869.00 to $8,848.00¹. Subtract the frame range from the bundle range and the mattress share brackets between $1,399.00 and $4,258.00. That subtraction is ours, on two ranges from the same feed, and the ends are not guaranteed to be matching configurations.

What nobody publishes is what it costs to get a frame into a finished bedroom and standing. Delivery, assembly, stair carries and old bed removal are quoted case by case and no authoritative source aggregates them. A custom canopy is carpentry, and the published reference there is wages: carpenters had a national median of $29.12 an hour and an annual median of $60,580 in the 2025 OEWS estimates⁷. That is pay to employees, not a billed rate. Treat it as a floor for the labor line in a quote, never as the quote.

Who does the work

For a shipped frame, a delivery and assembly crew rather than a licensed trade. For a canopy built in place, scribed to a wall, or anchored overhead, a carpenter. The 2025 OEWS estimates put carpenters at a national median of $29.12 an hour and an annual median of $60,580⁷. Those are employee wages, not what a shop bills you.

What pros will ask

Mattress size and depth, since frame rails and headboard reveal depend on it. Ceiling height measured at the bed wall to the lowest projection, because beams at 4 feet on center may drop 6 inches⁴. Doorway width and stair turns for a headboard that does not fold. And whether a canopy top rail or drapery track is meant to touch the ceiling at all.

Will a canopy bed fit under my ceiling?

Measure to the lowest projection over the bed, not to the flat of the ceiling. Saint Paul publishes a 7 foot minimum ceiling height for basement habitable space, measured from finished floor to the lowest projection⁴. Tacoma publishes 6 feet 8 inches for attic conversions in a March 2025 tip sheet⁵. Those are minimums, not what your house has, so measure yours. Saint Paul also allows beams and girders spaced at least 4 feet on center to drop 6 inches below the required height⁴, and a beam over the bed is what a canopy rail will hit.

What does an upholstered frame add to the price?

With one maker you can see it exactly. Floyd listed an upholstered bed frame add-on at $700.00, and The Floyd Bed Original in upholstered form at $2,250.00¹. That is the fabric decision priced on its own, which is unusual and useful. Most makers roll upholstery into a model price, so you cannot separate it. When a quote will not split the upholstery from the frame, you have no way to judge whether the fabric is worth what it is adding.

Should I buy the bed and mattress together as a system?

Only if you can see both prices. Floyd published its Sleep System, bed plus mattress, at $2,869.00 to $8,848.00, and its frames alone at $1,470.00 to $4,590.00¹. Subtracting one range from the other puts the mattress share somewhere between $1,399.00 and $4,258.00, which is our arithmetic and comes with a caveat: the top and bottom of each published range may not be the same configuration. A bundle you cannot decompose is a bundle you cannot compare against anything else.

Do I need a permit to hang a canopy or drapery from the ceiling?

Freestanding furniture, no. Anchoring into the building, ask first. The 2021 International Residential Code exempts painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work from a building permit⁶. It also requires anyone intending to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move or demolish a building or structure to apply for a permit⁶. Screwing a light track into a joist is a judgment call your building department makes, not you. The same code section adds that being permit-exempt never authorizes work that violates any other provision or local ordinance⁶.
