Storm doors are the least sourced job in this whole category

This is the thinnest topic in the service, so here is the position up front. Not one source checked for this guide names a storm door. No price, no return at resale, no shipment volume, nothing. The national remodelling study that prices door projects covers three of them, and a storm door is not among them¹. The federal household survey bundles doors with windows into a single median². That is the entire published record.

What is left is the machinery around the job, and for storm doors it matters more than usual, because this is the cheapest door work most households will ever buy. Fixed permit minimums do not scale down. Broward County, Florida charges the greater of a $125 minimum or 1.85% of job value³. Rockville, Maryland sets a $142 minimum permit fee, adds a $142 residential filing fee, then applies a 10.25% automation fee on all permit and application fees⁴.

The second thing that bites at this price point is licensing. California exempts small jobs from its contractor licence law, but the exemption has two conditions rather than one: the aggregate contract price for labour, materials and everything else must be under $1,000, and the work must require no building permit⁵. In Piedmont, California, where a permit is required to replace any exterior door⁶, that exemption is unavailable no matter how small the job.

Six things to settle before you buy a storm door

With no price data in existence, the rules around the job are the only hard information available.

Nobody prices this door

Searches for storm door costs return plenty of numbers, and every one we traced came from a lead-generation aggregator with no published method. No manufacturer list, retailer page or industry study in this research names a storm door. California's D-28 scope at least names "wood and screen doors"⁷, which is the closest thing to recognition we found.

Small jobs are where minimums bite

Percentage-based permit fees have floors, and floors dominate cheap work. Broward County charges the greater of $125 or 1.85% of job value³. Rockville stacks a $142 minimum permit fee, a $142 residential filing fee and a 10.25% automation fee applied to all permit and application fees⁴. On a job this size, those minimums are the fee.

Adding a door is not replacing one

Austin's exempt-work list is written around "replacing doors of the same size and operation"⁸. A storm door hung in front of an entry door that stays where it is amounts to an addition rather than a replacement, and that wording does not obviously reach it. Ask your building department instead of assuming it either way.

Where every exterior door needs a permit

Piedmont, California states that you need a permit if you are replacing exterior doors or windows, and that this includes garage doors⁶. It then adds design review, exempting in-kind replacements only where size, location, operation and wall recess are all unchanged⁶. A city that particular about a front door is worth asking about a storm door.

The licence exemption you may not have

California's small-job exemption sits at $1,000, not the $500 still printed on a great many sites, and it applies only when the work also requires no building permit⁵. The statute also addresses splitting a job into contracts under the threshold⁵. Cheap does not automatically make unlicensed lawful.

ENERGY STAR, and a credit that closed

The federal credit reached "exterior doors that meet applicable Energy Star requirements" at 30% of cost, capped at $250 per door and $500 total, inside a $1,200 annual limit⁹. The IRS page does not name storm doors either way. It is academic now: the credit covers property placed in service before December 31, 2025⁹.

What does a storm door cost?

This guide prints no storm door price, because no source we could read publishes one. The remodelling study with a stated method covers garage door replacement, steel entry door replacement and a fiberglass grand entrance, and stops there¹. The Census Bureau and HUD report a $2,800 median spend on doors and windows together, which cannot be split and certainly cannot be narrowed to a storm door². Retailer pages, where product prices actually live, refused automated requests. What you find quoted elsewhere is aggregator output with nothing behind it.

The fees are published, and on a job this size they are the part worth planning for. Broward County prices the permit as the greater of a $125 minimum or 1.85% of job value³. Run that arithmetic and the percentage only overtakes the floor once job value passes about $6,757, which is our own division of $125 by 0.0185 rather than a number Broward prints. Below that, everyone pays $125. Hernando County's fee evaluation carries a residential door and window line, size for size, at an existing fee of $126.56 against a recommended $140.00, with no adoption date we could read¹⁰. Wake County, North Carolina charges $75 plus $0.25 per square foot for residential alterations¹¹.

Every figure here is a published permit or licensing figure from Broward County, Hernando County, Wake County, Rockville and the state of California, plus the Census and HUD doors-and-windows median, and none of them is a price for a storm door, its hardware or its installation.

Who does the work

No occupation code isolates storm door installers. The nearest is mechanical door repairers, SOC 49-9011, 27,120 people nationally with a median annual wage of $55,720¹². In California the D-28 doors, gates and activating devices scope names "wood and screen doors" outright, so this work sits inside a licensed classification even though nobody publishes what it costs⁷.

What pros will ask

The width and height of the existing opening, measured at the brickmould rather than at the door slab. Which way the primary door swings and which side its hinges sit on. Whether a storm door is there now. Full view or ventilating. And how much drop there is at the sill, because that decides whether an expander is needed.

What to check before signing

Whether a permit, if one is needed, is inside the quoted price or billed to you afterwards, because a fixed minimum like Broward's $125 is a real share of a job this small³. Who is responsible for the closers and the hardware. And whether your city requires a permit at all, since that answer also decides whether a licence exemption is available to the person quoting⁶.

How much does a storm door cost installed?

We do not know, and neither does anyone publishing a methodology. This was searched for specifically. No manufacturer price list, no retailer page and no industry study reached in this research names a storm door at all, and the two national datasets that touch doors either cover different projects entirely¹ or bundle doors with windows². Get three quotes on an identical specification, full view or ventilating, hardware named, closers counted, and compare those against each other rather than against a national figure that does not exist.

Do I need a permit to fit a storm door?

Ask your building department, and do not read across from another city. Austin's exemption is worded around replacing doors of the same size and operation, and adding a storm door in front of an existing entry door is not obviously a replacement⁸. Piedmont, California requires a permit to replace exterior doors as a matter of course, and layers design review on top of it⁶. Those are two American cities giving different answers to closely related work, both stated plainly on their own sites.

Is there still a tax credit for an ENERGY STAR storm door?

Not for anything installed now. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit paid 30% of qualified costs on exterior doors meeting applicable ENERGY STAR requirements, capped at $250 per door and $500 in total, under a $1,200 annual limit⁹. In its final year the IRS also required a Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number on the return⁹. It applies to qualifying property placed in service before December 31, 2025⁹. The IRS page does not name storm doors specifically, and no replacement incentive was found.

Is this job small enough to skip a licensed contractor?

In California that depends on the permit, not only on the price. Business and Professions Code 7048 exempts a project only where the aggregate contract price for labour, materials and all other items is under $1,000 and the work requires no building permit⁵. Both tests have to pass. In a city like Piedmont, where replacing an exterior door needs a permit as standard⁶, the exemption is off the table at any price. The threshold is also $1,000, not the $500 still widely repeated.

Storm door, or just replace the entry door?

Only one of those two options has published data behind it. Zonda puts steel entry door replacement at a $2,435 national average job cost with 216.4% recouped at resale, second of 28 projects¹. There is no equivalent figure for a storm door, in either direction. If the damage is sudden rather than gradual, check the insurance route first: Harvard's Joint Center reports that insurance settlements funded 18 percent of exterior replacement spending and 68 percent of disaster repair projects¹³.
