Every figure available came from lead-generation aggregators. Second, and more importantly, the federal safety material was unreachable. The CPSC page covering garage door operators returned HTTP 403 to every request, and the electronic Code of Federal Regulations redirected to an access-control interstitial.

So this guide states no safety requirement, no compliance date and no injury statistic for garage door operators. Not because they do not matter, but because we could not read a primary source and will not repeat one second hand. If a salesperson quotes you a rule or a number about entrapment protection, ask them to point at the CPSC page or the regulation itself, and read it yourself before you buy on the strength of it.

The product choice is the easy part. These are the parts that cost people money.

A licensed activity, not an accessory

The door exemption may not cover the opener

Austin's exempt-work list names "replacing or installing an overhead garage door on a garage"⁴. That wording is about the door. It does not mention the operator, so do not read the exemption across to opener work without asking. Piedmont, California requires a permit for exterior door replacement and says that includes garage doors⁵.

Who is actually holding the screwdriver

This is a compressed, comparatively low-paid trade. Mechanical door repairers reach $37.63 an hour at the 90th percentile, against $52.17 for electricians and $48.03 for carpenters at the same percentile². The person wiring your opener is very often not an electrician, which is worth knowing rather than worrying about.

No credit, then or now

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit reached exterior doors meeting ENERGY STAR requirements at $250 each and $500 total⁶. Garage doors were never on that list, and neither were openers. The credit is also closed to property placed in service after December 31, 2025⁶. Treat any offer of one as a red flag.

What does a garage door opener cost?

Nobody with a published method says. Opener replacement sits among the highest-volume searches in this whole category and it could not be sourced from anywhere that explains how its numbers were produced. The one national door figure that does come with a stated method is Zonda's garage door replacement at a $4,672 average job cost with 267.7% recouped at resale, first of 28 projects⁷, and that prices the door, not the operator. Retailer pages carrying opener prices refused automated requests throughout this research.

Two verified inputs do shape your number. Labour is the first: mechanical door repairers earn a mean hourly wage of $27.67, a mean annual wage of $57,540 and a median annual wage of $55,720, running from $38,490 a year at the 10th percentile to $78,260 at the 90th². Read that as what technicians are paid, not what a company bills you, because no published multiplier between the two exists. Permits and electrical fees are the second, and they are local. Broward County's electrical schedule alone sets a $125 minimum or 1.85% of job value, whichever is greater³.
