If you came here for the price of a spring replacement, start with the honest answer. No source that states how it produced its numbers publishes that figure. Spring, cable, roller, off-track and opener repair prices are everywhere online, and the ones we could trace all lead back to lead-generation aggregators that never say how the number was reached. This guide does not print one.

What is published is the cost of replacing the whole door. Zonda's 2025 Cost vs Value Report puts garage door replacement at a $4,672 national average job cost against $12,507 of value at resale, a 267.7% return that made it the highest-return project of all 28 studied, for the second consecutive year¹. Treat that as a ceiling. If a repair quote approaches it, you are being asked to pay replacement money for a fix.

The trade doing the work is small. BLS counts 27,120 mechanical door repairers nationally, the occupation that covers garage door technicians, with a median annual wage of $55,720². Whether you need a permit depends entirely on where you live. Austin lists "replacing or installing an overhead garage door on a garage" as work exempt from a building permit³. Piedmont, California says you need a permit to replace exterior doors, and that "this includes garage doors"⁴.

Torsion and extension springs

The springs counterbalance the weight of the door so the opener only has to overcome friction. This is the failure people phone about most and the one with no published price anywhere in this research. It is also the job where a licensed, insured technician matters most, because a wound spring is holding real energy.

Cables, drums and shaft

Cables run from the bottom brackets up to drums on the spring shaft and do the lifting. A frayed or jumped cable usually shows itself as a door hanging crooked in the opening. No price for this repair is published. Ask whether the drums and shaft are being reused or replaced, because that changes the quote.

Rollers, hinges and track

Rollers ride the vertical and horizontal track and hinges join the sections. This is the class of repair most often folded into a tune-up visit. Insist it is itemised. A quote that says "full service" without naming parts cannot be compared against a second quote, which is the whole point of getting one.

Off-track and damaged sections

A door that has jumped its track after an impact is a safety problem rather than a maintenance item, and it often involves replacing sections. This is the repair most likely to cross into replacement territory, so hold any quote against Zonda's $4,672 national average for replacing the door outright¹.

The opener and its wiring

The operator is a separate product from the door and usually a separate decision. California treats both as one licence class: the D-28 scope covers overhead door assemblies together with "power activated doors" and "any low voltage electronic or manually operated door hardware/device"⁵.

Seals, weatherstrip and jamb stop

The rubber along the bottom edge and the stop moulding down the jambs are the wear items that make a sound door feel draughty. No installed price for this work appears in any source that states a method, and it is small enough that most companies will fold it into a visit booked for something else.

What does garage door repair cost?

There is no verified national price for a spring replacement, a cable repair, an off-track correction, a roller swap or an opener replacement. Those are among the highest-volume searches in this category and not one of them could be sourced to a publisher that states a method. What does exist is Zonda's whole-door figure of $4,672, produced from surveys of real estate professionals combined with Verisk's XactRemodel estimating tool¹. That is a resale-oriented national estimate, not a quote for your door.

Three things move your actual number. Labour is the first: mechanical door repairers earn an annual mean of $64,850 in Washington against $41,920 in Alabama, a 1.55x spread that is real but narrower than the same spread for electricians². The permit is the second, where one is required at all. Broward County charges the greater of a $125 minimum or 1.85% of job value, so on a job the size of Zonda's average the $125 floor governs⁶. The door and parts are the third, and no retailer price could be verified for this guide.

Look the company up with the BBB, because the industry's own trade body says buyers increasingly do. DASMA reported that inquiries about garage door repair companies rose 28% in 2020, and that the category ranked 559th of 6,102 for complaints, against 207th of 2,900 fifteen years earlier⁷. That report is dated Fall 2021, so read it as five years old.

The state's small-job exemption is $1,000, not the $500 many sites still print, and it only applies when the work also needs no building permit⁸. In Piedmont, where every exterior door replacement needs a permit, that exemption is unavailable at any price. Whether other states license this trade separately was not verified here.

Is there a tax credit for a new garage door?

No, on two counts. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covered exterior doors meeting ENERGY STAR requirements at 30% of cost, capped at $250 per door and $500 in total, and garage doors were never on that list⁹. It is also closed: the IRS states the credit applies to qualifying property placed in service before December 31, 2025⁹. No replacement incentive was found. If a contractor offers a credit as a selling point in 2026, ask them to point at the IRS page.
