The other thing to settle early is the permit, because two cities give opposite answers to the same job. Austin exempts "replacing doors of the same size and operation" from a building permit⁶. Piedmont, California requires a permit for any exterior door replacement, adds a design review step, and asks for floor plans, photographs and manufacturer cut sheets before it will issue⁷.

Sliding, French or multi-panel

It is a glass job as much as a door job

Which cap would have applied

The federal credit set different limits for exterior doors, $250 each and $500 total, than for exterior windows and skylights at $600⁸. The IRS page we read does not say which side a sliding glass patio door falls on. It is moot now: the credit closed to property placed in service after December 31, 2025⁸.

Where a fee line item actually exists

What does a sliding patio door cost?

There is no honest answer to that question from the published record, so here is the shape of the hole instead. Zonda's Cost vs Value Report prices door projects nationally and states its method, but the projects it publishes are garage door replacement, steel entry door replacement and a fiberglass grand entrance¹. Nothing sliding, nothing patio. The Census Bureau and HUD put the median homeowner spend on doors and windows at $2,800, bundled, and that bundle cannot be separated².
