Junk Removal and Tipping Fees

It is what a disposal facility charges to accept material, usually stated per ton with a minimum for small loads. Part of it can be a pass through from the state rather than the county: Butler County, Kansas notes that all of its per ton and per load disposal prices include a state imposed tipping fee of $1.00 per ton⁵. The structure varies. King County bills a $40.25 minimum for up to 320 pounds and $243.38 per ton beyond it², while Dane County uses flat bands, starting at $15.03 for anything up to 500 pounds⁴.

Because no agency or trade association publishes one with a stated method that could be verified for this guide. Averages circulating online generally come from aggregators that do not say what they sampled. The five county schedules here show why an average would mislead anyway: general waste runs from $37.15 per ton¹ to $243.38 per ton², a spread of roughly six to one. A mean drawn across numbers that far apart would describe no actual county, and these five were selected by which websites published readable tables.

Because of a federal rule rather than a hauler's markup. Refrigerant must be evacuated to a specified level before an appliance is disposed of, and the final processor, meaning the scrap recycler or landfill operator, must either recover it themselves or hold a signed statement naming who recovered it and when, kept for three years⁶. That work gets priced into the gate fee. Washington County, Utah charges $38.64 per freon appliance against $37.15 per ton of municipal solid waste¹. King County charges $30.00 per unit² and Butler County $20.00⁵.

Sometimes dramatically. Washington County, Utah accepts residential loads under one ton per month at no charge¹. Carroll County, Maryland lists a flat $8 rate for a resident car under 200 pounds, which is also its minimum disposal fee³. Against that, count the penalties for getting it wrong. An unsecured load doubles the per ton rate in Butler County⁵, costs a flat $15.00 per occurrence for residential customers in Washington County¹, and adds $25 in King County². Check in advance which items your local site accepts and at which station.

Look for five things in this order. The minimum charge and what weight it covers. The per ton rate above it. The category list, since construction and demolition, bulky waste, yard trim and clean wood are usually priced separately, as in Carroll County where they run $85, $75, $40 and a separate line each³. The per item fees for mattresses, refrigerant appliances and tires⁵. And the secured load rule. Also check whether anything you are bringing needs advance clearance, as King County requires for special waste².
