A theme is mostly surfaces, and surfaces have published prices

Almost every kids room theme comes down to four surfaces: a wall, a window, a floor and whatever sits on the shelf. All four can be done with removable materials that manufacturers price openly. Tempaper lists its Unicorn Garden peel and stick single roll at $65.00 with a sample at $8.00.¹ RoomMates lists licensed character borders at $29.99 and wall quote decals at $18.99.² Both read on 7 August 2026.

The theme decisions that matter are the ones that change the furniture. A loft or bunk brings a federal standard with it, including a required warning against children under 6 using the upper bunk.⁴ A themed dresser is a clothing storage unit and, if manufactured after September 1, 2023, must comply with ASTM F2057-23.⁵

There is one theme habit worth naming. Putting the good stuff high, a display shelf of models or a toy on top of a wardrobe, gives a small child a reason to climb. Climbing was the mechanism in 56 of 72 known child furniture tip-over death scenarios, 78 percent.⁶ Children ages one and two carry the highest injury rates in their own age groups, 46 and 32 per 100,000.⁶

The cheapest way to commit to a theme without committing the room. Borders, decals and licensed characters

The category built for themes that expire. RoomMates publishes licensed character borders at $29.99, wall quote decals at $18.99, dry erase wall products at $20.99 and canvas wall art at $6.99.² Nothing here is structural, nothing needs a trade, and the whole lot comes off when the theme does.

Floors and play surfaces

An overlooked half of a theme. RoomMates publishes peel and stick floor tiles from $5.99 to $23.99 and vinyl floor runners from $59.99 to $79.99.² A road or a chequerboard reads as a theme from the doorway.

Loft, bunk and cabin themes

The moment a theme adds height it adds a standard. A bed is a bunk bed federally when the underside of any foundation is over 30 inches from the floor.⁴ That brings two guardrails, the continuous one opposite the ladder, and the required warning against children under 6 years of age using the upper bunk.⁴

Windows in a themed room

Decorate the glass, not the cord. RoomMates publishes window decals from $26.99 to $35.99.² CPSC calls window covering cord strangulation a hidden hazard, and says cord cleats and tension devices are unlikely to be effective because children can still access cords by climbing on furniture.⁷ A theme should not put climbable furniture under a corded blind.

Storage that becomes part of the theme

Toy storage and display are where themes and tip-over risk meet. Of the 16 furniture-related child tip-over deaths CPSC reported since January 1, 2020, 13 involved a chest, bureau or dresser, and 44 percent of all reported tip-over deaths happened in bedrooms.⁶ Anchor it, and keep the reward low.

What does it cost?

Here is a themed wall built entirely from published prices. One licensed character border at $29.99, one wall quote decal at $18.99 and two canvas wall art pieces at $6.99 each comes to $62.96.² That is arithmetic on the manufacturer's own figures, it is materials only, and it excludes labor and tools. Swap the border for a Tempaper single roll at $65.00 and the same wall is $97.97 in material.¹²

One gap is worth flagging. Tempaper publishes a single roll price but no roll dimensions in its product data, so $65.00 cannot honestly be converted to a cost per square foot.¹ Chasing Paper publishes panel sizes alongside prices, so that conversion works there.³ On labor, the 2025 OEWS annual estimates put painters at a median of $23.75 an hour, which is a wage paid to employees, not what a firm bills you.⁸ No source found publishes a billed rate or an installed price for a themed room.

Who does the work

Most of a theme is a homeowner job, which is exactly what the peel and stick, border and decal categories exist for. You hire out three things: paint, especially in a home built before 1978 where a certified firm is required; a bunk or loft bed assembled correctly; and anchoring anything that stores or displays. None of those three is where the theme lives, and all three are where the risk does.

What pros will ask

Expect a question about the ages of the children, because the bunk bed instructions must carry a warning against children under 6 on the upper bunk.⁴ Expect a question about whether you rent, which decides between removable and permanent materials. Expect questions about ceiling height for any loft, and about what is going on the walls at reachable height versus climbing height.

What to check before signing

Check that anything the theme adds at height is anchored, and that anchoring hardware is in the quote rather than assumed. Check the manufacture date on any themed dresser, since only clothing storage units made after September 1, 2023 fall under the federal standard.⁵ Check that window coverings in the room are not corded.⁷ Check that removable materials really are, before they go over fresh paint.

Is a loft bed a good idea for a themed room?

It depends on the child's age, and the federal standard is unusually blunt about it. A bed counts as a bunk bed when the underside of any foundation is over 30 inches from the floor, and the instructions must warn that children under 6 years of age should not use the upper bunk.⁴ The standard also requires two guardrails, one on each side, with the continuous guardrail on the side opposite the ladder.⁴ A loft with the guardrail on the wrong side is not a themed bed, it is a defective one.

Do themed dressers and toy chests have to meet the tip-over standard?

Only if they are clothing storage units manufactured after September 1, 2023.⁵ That rule is aimed at protecting children up to 72 months of age from tip-over-related death or injury.⁵ A themed piece bought secondhand, or made before that date, is outside it entirely. The hazard data says treat it as the priority anyway: 13 of the 16 furniture-related child tip-over deaths CPSC reported since January 1, 2020 involved a chest, bureau or dresser.⁶

What about themed curtains and blinds?

Fabric is fine, cords are the problem. The federal standard for operating cords on custom window coverings took effect on May 30, 2023.⁷ CPSC describes cord strangulation as a hidden hazard because consumers do not appreciate how quickly and silently it occurs, and it states that adult supervision is unlikely to eliminate or reduce the hazard in a room considered safe, such as a bedroom.⁷ If you want the window to carry the theme, RoomMates publishes window decals from $26.99 to $35.99.²
