Many movers offer storage-in-transit when closings do not line up, holding your load in their warehouse between homes.

What do movers cost?
Local moves commonly bill an hourly rate for a two-to-four person crew and truck, so the driver of cost is how much stuff you own and how far the crew carries it: stairs, elevators and long walks to the door all add hours. A one-bedroom apartment often lands near the low end, a four-bedroom house well past the middle.

Verify before you shortlist
For interstate movers check the USDOT number and complaint history; for local moves check state licensing and insurance. Skip anyone whose paperwork is vague.
Get in-person or video quotes
Three or four quotes based on a real walkthrough of your stuff. Ask each for binding or binding-not-to-exceed pricing and a written list of extra charges.
Read the coverage terms
Basic released-value protection pays by the pound, which is nearly nothing for electronics. Price full-value protection and decide deliberately, not by default.
